This program came about to meet requests from the families that I worked with over the years.  After their child would completed my system, they saw fantastic results.  They wanted to work with me and reach many children in their community!  Let me tell you how this all began.

I am a mom of a 14 y/o daughter who suffered a brain injury at the age of 11 months and who recently came out of remission lending to additional brain injury. I also have a son who struggles with sensory issues.  I have felt the frustration, upset and worry you’re feeling now about your child’s struggle to learn.  When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer and an autoimmune disorder that caused brain injury, I knew we were in for some great challenges.  Academically, my daughter kept moving from grade to grade but she definitely did not have the age appropriate cognitive skills needed for learning.  She quickly had a 4-5 year gap compared to where her peers where in their learning ability.

The state classified her with early intervention and the public school kept her in self-contained programs. As she got older, she would come home crying about school.  She was frustrated and upset that she still could not read.  She could not understand why her school was not doing everything they could to help her?  Why wasn’t she able to read yet? Worst of all, I was really losing hope. The child study team had me convinced that my daughter may never be able to learn or catch up.  I was told to stop being in denial and face facts.  My heart kept telling me that a solution existed and that I needed to find this fast!

One day, I decided to begin researching about cognitive rehabilitation for brain injured children. You see, the autoimmune disorder that my daughter has is so rare that a protocol for helping my daughter is still being created through research efforts.  My daughter never once received cognitive rehabilitation like a person would receive after a bad trauma to the head.

I finally found a program that I was interested in and began to to learn everything I could on the program. I called the creators of the program and spoke directly with them about my daughter’s situation.  I wanted to know directly from the creator of the program what this could really do for my child and other children.  Next, I contacted existing brain trainers and began talking with them over the course of six to eight months.  I decided it was time to get my license and try brain training on my children.

Trust me, I immediately came home from training and began working with my children. The great news is that the program worked very well.  For the amount of work in the program we completed, their measures increased like the research said it would and my children began to show improvement in all areas.  I then began to work with other children in my area.  I noticed their scores went up, too and that some children did better than others?  This made me curious.

Moms loved the results but the biggest obstacle was integrating the skills into the classroom. Sometimes, I cried from sheer exhaustion and total frustration. I was able to train the children using brain training but I wasn’t always seeing the results transfer into the school classroom.  What was wrong?

After hours and hours of training students and learning all that I could between neuroplasticity and how the brain learns, I figured it out! Brain training was one piece of the pie, moms you already know this, its not the magic bullet – yet – the most important piece because it lays down the foundation with new pathways and stronger synapses.

However, most brain training programs leave your child with stronger skills but without approach to task, if you will, on how to make these skills useful in school and help begin to bridge the gap to independent learner. No where was this existing where you can help your child from start to finish all in one program.

I finally figured out an end-to-end system!

All of my students show measurable results and performance improves in school – dramatically. I educate parents on how to coach their child to success so they always know what to do and are empowered as their child’s best advocate.

How did I do this? I took the best of existing brain training programs, approach to task methodology, supplemental resources, brain research and organized it into an easy to follow 10 step system that would help students strengthen cognitive skills and transfer these skills into the classroom.

Once I started to implement the system, I kept getting consistent successful results and students became even more independent and confident. I began educating moms along the way so they knew the steps to take to help their own child.  Once you have the awareness and education – its easy to follow and do yourself.

Today, my main focus is about transforming students into independent learners. My writing, coaching and speaking is focused primarily around my system and the life changing effects it has on students.  I’m here to tell you that there’s hope. I do what I do because I want to help other moms avoid the great upset and frustration of believing there is no hope for their child.  Now that I know how to help students learn easier and more efficiently, I am spreading the word to as many moms as possible.

Before working with Colleen, my daughter, age 11, has always struggles with her academics. She has a slow processing speed, poor working memory, and weak executive function skills. She completed the PACE (Processing and Cognitive Enhancement) program with a trainer, here in Massachusetts, over the summer.

Due to the short summer, she was unable to complete the full 12 weeks of PACE and wanted to continue with the at home, computer version called Brainskills. I was simply looking for someone to walk us through the program, help us with the exercises when we got stuck, and provide encouragement for my daughter. Colleen far exceeded my expectations!

Here is some of what she did for us:

1) With her deep understanding of cognitive skills, Colleen was able to guide us through the Brainskills program. She explained the exercises, how they were related to my daughter’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses, and how they impact her academic performance, daily activities, and behaviors. When we were stuck on an exercise, she would walk us through it using Skype.

2) After identifying my daughter’s cognitive weaknesses, Colleen worked to find the biggest area of academic weakness, comprehension, and then drilled down to figure out what, specifically was the limiting factor. Was it her decoding, her memory, poor vocabulary, or difficulty seeing the big picture? By pinpointing the specific problem, we could make a plan of attack.

3) Colleen helped me to reach out to my daughter’s teachers, using language that they would understand and respond to. Most schools are not up to speed on cognitive skills, but they can talk about vocabulary and comprehension. Now, putting grades aside, we could all have the same goal of improving comprehension.

4) One of Colleen’s greatest strengths is her broad base of knowledge, huge database of resources, and ability to provide us with choices. She always gave multiple choices for how to address a problem area, had a sensitivity to cost, and was non-judgmental. She always provided options to work independently at home, options for low cost online programs, sometimes more costly and elaborate online programs, or one to one tutoring and training programs. She went out of her way to help me find programs and resources here in Massachusetts too.

5) Having worked through the system both professionally and personally, Colleen really helped me to understand my choices in terms of future education for my daughter…private versus public.

I am happy to say that my daughter is having her best academic year in a long time! Her cognitive skills have all improved and I am seeing carryover into her academics. Her memory is improved. She is more organized, able to think more clearly, and therefore, communicate better.

I can say wholeheartedly, that I, as a parent, am also in a much better place. Colleen has been wonderful. She was always there to listen without judgment, offer support and suggestions, and give us options! She has given me so much more hope for my daughter’s future. Before working with Colleen, My son, Mitchell was literally failing all but one subject in school. He is in 5th grade. His reading, writing and spelling skills were very weak. I was seriously contemplating homeschooling Mitchell to help him. That is when I contacted Colleen. She encouraged me to do what my gut was telling me all along.
